A basic tool kit for any project would be:
- Self-healing mat
- Exacto with new blades (note plural)
- Straight edge. Do not use a straight edge that has a cork bottom. Your knife can lean underneath and you will mis-cut your materials.
- Scale Ruler
- Small weights. Bottles of paint and glue can be used as weights too.
- Paint Brushes. Don’t go cheap here. Spend the money and buy good brushes for good results.
- Sand Paper (220)
- Emory boards/Sanding sticks (various grits)
- Pen Vice and dill bits
- Tweezers (I prefer negative tweezers)
- Opti-visor
- Glues (Yellow or Carpenters, Tacky Glue, Super Glue)
- Glue applicator of choice
- Something to put your glue on while working. I prefer the bottom of a shot glass.
- A chopper. This really is a must. We are going to be making a LOT of repetitive cuts and a chopper will not only speed this up but ensure that all the pieces get cut the same length.
- Basic screwdriver set
- Razor Saw with a miter box
- Small pair of Needle Nose Plyers
- A pair of wire cutters (small)
- A few squares of Paper Towels and or rags. This is for cleanup as well as staining stripwood.
This is just the basic tools list. Beyond this list of tools you will need a boxcar red or black paint (we are providing white letters so no MOW Gray). We will cover some weathering so you will also need some alcohol and India Ink stain and any other weather powders/pencils/ or chalks.
Hope this helps,
Duane
