The late Stan Pirzchalski, MMR, was a lifetime member of NMRA. Stan's contributions to the arts, charities, and model railroading leave a lasting mark. Stan's layout is reminiscent of his childhood through the 1940's and 50's. The railroad grew over 25 years into an amazing miniature world of buildings and track nestled in a mixture of terrain including mountains, bridges, waterfalls, cities and more. The acronym for the layout's name MDAK was derived from a term of endearment that Stan used to honor his wife Karen who not only joined the NMRA but was an active participant.
The MDAK is an imagineered HO Scale steam era railroad of the early 50s, featuring heavy duty mainline action in a mountainous setting. It has 1,802 linear feet of track or 156,774 scale feet which equates to 29.6 scale miles. Most of the mainline is fully signaled including some major sidings. Control is DCC radio control using Digitrax. There are 23 bridges along with 17 tunnels including 133 turnouts. There are 125 buildings on the layout including 42 fully detailed major craftsmen kits. Many of the buildings and cities on the layout have family, friend and childhood memory acronyms. There are many animated signs along with 15 animated figures (watch for them when visiting the layout).
The Railroad was started in 1987. It grew from a 4' X 8' flat top to the now sprawling 67' X 27' miniature wonderland built by Stan & Karen. It has been featured in the Fort Worth Star Telegram, Colleyville Courier, 360 West Magazine and the Lone Star Region Marker Lamp. People from all over the world have visited the MDAK! Karen passed away in 2007 after a 21-year battle with cancer. Stan passed away in 2022. The railroad remains today as the family's tribute to the artistic skill of Stan and Karen. The railroad was on the tour for the 2023 Texas Express International NMRA Convention held in Grapevine, Texas.
The Cowcatcher Division 1 of the Lone Start Region is honored to present Stan's and Karen's wonderful layout on the division website.
